Graphics output is good enough for most internal business uses, but short of the quality we'd expect for formal reports or PowerPoint handouts. For laser-class printers, however, even subpar text is good enough for most any internal business use, and most other uses short of ones requiring small type. The MC873dn's output quality is a weak area, with below-par text, slightly subpar graphics, and subpar photo quality in our tests. The Xerox Phaser 7100/DN ( at Amazon) and the OKI C831dn, both single-function tabloid printers, turned in speeds of 7.7ppm and 7.5ppm in simplex mode, respectively. The HP Laserjet Enterprise 700 Color MFP M775DN ($4,298.83 at Amazon), rated at 30ppm, tested at 6ppm. Manufacturers' speed ratings are based on text-only printing, while our suite combines text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.

I timed the MC873dn on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at 8.6 pages per minute (ppm), a respectable speed for its 35ppm rating.

The MC873dn offers USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit Ethernet) connectivity we tested it on an Ethernet network with drivers installed on a PC running Windows Vista. The OKI MC873dnc and the OKI MC873dnx are both floor-standing models the OKI MC873dnc ($4,159) adds a cabinet plus caster base, and the OKI MC873dnx ($4,699) adds two 535-sheet trays, for a total 1,470-sheet capacity, as well as the caster base. Two other models are in OKI's MC873 series.

It comes with an auto-duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper and a 20-sheet offline stapler for manually stapling printed pages together. It has a 400-sheet standard paper capacity, between a 300-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. This MFP is built for heavy print volumes, with a maximum 100,000 page-per-month duty cycle. (We tested the printer on the floor, because it was too tall to put on a PC Labs bench without it hitting the top shelf.) The front panel holds a tilting 7-inch color touch screen and alphanumeric keypad. It measures 27.6 by 22.2 by 23.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 141 pounds, so you'll need at least two-preferably three-people to move it, and you wouldn't want to share a desk with it. Its 100-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (ADF) can scan, copy, or fax two-sided documents at up to tabloid width it scans one side, flips the page over, and scans the other side. It supports secure, password-protected printing, and has a built-in 250GB encrypted hard drive. It can scan to email, a network folder, or USB key (which it can also print from). The MC873dn prints, copies, faxes, and scans. It should still be an appealing choice for offices that need to print a lot in color for internal use, but there are also some creative, cost-effective alternatives to the MC873dn worth considering. Its main drawback is that its output quality was subpar across the board in our testing. The MC873dn ($2,999.99 at Amazon) is reasonably fast and has a good range of MFP features, including a 100-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (ADF) and a built-in hard drive. The OKI MC873dn ($3,999) is a rarity among color laser multifunction printers (MFPs) in that it can print (as well as copy, scan, and fax) at up to tabloid (11-by-17-inch) size, an ability that accounts for the printer's hefty price and humongous size.
